Treasuring North Sumatra Railway (KA Sumatra Utara Aceh : Divre 1) – Bandar Khalifah Railway Station

Bandar Khalifah railway station is one of active station in Regional Division 1 (North Sumatra & Aceh) Indonesian Railways. It is the first railway station if we go from Medan city to the East, and serve the area of Percut Sei Tuan, especially Tembung city. Located around 9 km from Besar Medan City Railway Station. 

Kali ini kita menjelajah stasiun Bandar Khalifah, salah satu stasiun di Divre 1 PT. KAI yang merupakan stasiun pertama di luar Medan apabila kita bergerak keluar dari Kota Medan ke arah Timur. Stasiun ini melayani penumpang dari daerah sekitar Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan, terutama wilayah sekitar kota kecil Tembung

 

The station building itself sort of heritage from colonial era (not sure if it is built during colonial era, or after the Indonesian independence), which had been revitalized several times to its stake today. A small station, but fair number of passengers are using it to travel around North Sumatra. Here are the pictures

Bangunan stasiun ini agak mirip sejumlah bangunan stasiun warisan kolonial (tapi kurang yakin apa dibangun zaman kolonial atau sesudah kemerdekaan RI) yang telah mengalami beberapa pemugaran. Stasiun ini berukuran kecil tapi cukup banyak penumpang yang menggunakannya. Sila lihat foto-foto di bawah 

Even if it is tiny, there are fair number of passengers that are using this station, given there are huge population  around Percut Sei Tuan, perhaps the biggest commuter area near Medan City as the citizens roots here goes long way back to the people under Nederland colonalism back in 19th century, many of them working on palm and rubber plantations Some chairs are provided for them to wait on scheduled train. Lines of motorized rickshaw are waiting in line for the passengers dropped out from train (the drivers of course know at what time train is stopping everyady), and some street vendors are around.

Walaupun kecil, cukup banyak penumpang yang menggunakan stasiun ini, mengingat ada banyak penduduk yang tinggal di daerah Percut Sei Tuan, yang merupakan daerah k0muter terbesar di sisi Kota Medan dimana ada banyak penduduk telah tinggal sejak abad 19 zaman kolonial Belanda bekerja di area2 perkebunan karet dan kelapa sawit. Ada kursi-kursi untuk penumpang. Becak motor juga berbaris di luar stasiun menunggu kereta tiba, dimana biasanya mereka sudah hapal jadwal perjalanan Kereta Api. Ada juga sejumlah pedagang kaki lima. 

Street-crossing on this railway is a fairly crowded one albeit not the main road of Tembung city. Usually train goes slowly upon reaching this station from a distance while press the horns to warns people around. Still some motorcycles usually keep crossing because they can see the train is still far, however cars and other big vehicles will usually stop. A not so ascending crossing might not suitable for this point, needs to be reshaped so vehicles can pass the railway smoothly, but to be fair it is not really bad compared to some dangerous railway-street-crossing in Medan City. Hopefully the elevated railways be finished soon.

Perlintasan sebidang yang berlokasi persis dekat stasiun ini merupakan jalan pasar yang cukup ramai, meski bukan jalan utama di Kota Tembung.  Biasanya mendekati stasiun, kereta api akan sedikit memperlambat kereta sambil menekan klakson kereta sebagai warning. Begitupun, sejumlah pengendara sepeda motor tetap akan menyeberang karena mereka bisa melihat kereta masih jauh, sementara mobil dan kendaraan besar lainny akan berhenti. Ada sedikit gundukan di perlintasan KA ini sehingga mungkin kurang nyaman dan harus diperbaiki sedikit, tapi itu masih jauh lebih baik dibanding sejumlah perlintasan sebidang di Medan yg lumayan parah. Semoga jalur KA Layang segera selesai.

Just in the back of the station, a planned new building and platform are being worked to anticipate the growth number of passengers using Bandar Khalifah station. It is a modern style which in contrast with the small old building. Not sure what the old building will be, maybe just for office or even demolished, no news. Tidak jauh di belakang stasiun, sedang dibangun gedung dan platform stasiun yang baru, mengantisipasi pertumbuhan penumpang pengguna Stasiun Bandar Khalifah. Dengan model bangunan yang lebih modern, terlihat jauh berbeda dengan gedung stasiun yang lama. Entah akan digunakan sebagai kantor atau dirubuhkan, belum diketahui kelak nasib bangunan stasiun yang lama ini.
